Introduction: One of the biggest public health problems in Ecuador caused by viruses and bacteria are respiratory tract diseases, occurring more frequently in children. Objective: To identify the incidence of viruses and bacteria that cause acute respiratory infections in children under 15 years of age with the application of indirect immunofluorescence technique. Methodology: A narrative bibliographic review was carried out, this search covered articles and research from the last 10 years, extracted from Scielo, Scopus, Pubmed and Latindex. Results: 32 documents related to the description of the viruses and bacteria that cause respiratory infections and the application of the indirect immunofluorescence technique were selected, taking into account the inclusion and exclusion criteria proposed. Discussion: The etiological agents of the common respiratory diseases in children, with their characteristics and diagnoses, were identified through the application of detection methods. Conclusions: By means of the indirect immunofluorescence technique, atypical bacterial and viral etiological agents that affect patients with acute respiratory diseases can be recognized. Keywords: virus; bacteria; acute infections; indirect immunofluorescence.
