Abstract

Introduction: Bacterial vaginosis (BV) represents a public health threat, with high incidence and recurrence, affecting women´s quality of life. Restoration of protective Lactobacillus levels using probiotics is an attractive strategy for the management of recurrent BV. Objective: Compare the efficacy of probiotics based on Lactobacillus spp. in the treatment of recurrent BV following antibiotic treatment, in contrast to a placebo control group. Methods: A systematic review of randomized clinical trials (RCTs) was carried out using the Science Direct, PubMed, Cochrane and Google Scholar databases. Results: A total of 7 RCTs that compared various probiotics based on Lactobacillus spp were included in the analysis in patients who have received antibiotic therapy compared to a placebo control group. Discussion: Studies reveal that probiotics with Lactobacillus strains show promise in the treatment and prevention of BV with cure rates similar to control groups, but lower risk of long-term recurrence, and support for their efficacy in vaginal colonization and symptom reduction. Although some trials do not show significant differences, more research is needed regarding their effectiveness and treatment guidelines. Conclusions: The use of probiotics with Lactobacillus is a promising and effective alternative to prevent and treat recurrent BV by helping to restore the balance of the vaginal flora and significantly reducing the risk of recurrence.
