Introduction: Abnormal uterine bleeding is described as an alteration of the menstrual cycle outside of causes such as pregnancy, this anomaly affects more in menarche and perimenopause. Currently, several treatments for this alteration are described, however, the use of intrauterine devices with levonorgestrel (LNG-IUD), which in addition to acting as a contraceptive, significantly reduces abnormal uterine bleeding, therefore it takes a very important place in management of this disease. Objective: To investigate concepts about abnormal uterine bleeding and its management based on the role of the levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine device. Methods: A systematic bibliographic review was carried out in the databases available on the internet such as: Scielo, Elsevier, Cochrane Library, Pubmed, Intramed, UptoDate, ScienceDirect. In addition, a meticulous review of the collected material was reviewed, aimed at the most relevant theoretical aspects. Results: 50 bibliographic sources were found, of which 34 relevant scientific articles were used and 16 were excluded because they did not meet the selection criteria. Discussion: The levonorgestrel-releasing device, in addition to its use as a contraceptive, has demonstrated validity and safety in the management of heavy menstrual bleeding, the benefit being greater than the risk in the patient. Conclusions: Abnormal uterine bleeding represents a very frequent problem in clinical practice, being vital to detect the cause in time to give an effective treatment. That is why the levonorgestrel-releasing device is an alternative for those patients with abundant flows.
