Abstract

Introduction: Contraception has increased, the most used methods are hormonal, among which we can find combined or progestin-only, however their recommendation must be individualized. Objective: Identify eligibility criteria for progestin oral contraceptives in women with thyroid disease that avoid complications in their underlying pathology. Methods: This research is a non-systematic review, the following databases were analyzed: Elsevier, Medigraphic, Scielo and Pubmed in virtual libraries such as Springer and e-Book. Results: 50 bibliographies were analyzed, of which 35 reliable sources were selected among those that include international clinical guidelines, bibliographic reviews, and scientific articles. Discussion: There are no contraindications for the use of progestin-only oral contraceptives in women with thyroid disease. Conclusions: Thyroid pathologies are the second most common cause of infertility in women of childbearing age, each hormonal contraceptive method must be individualized, progestin-only contraceptives are widely recommended due to their low thyroid interaction.
