Abstract

Introduction: Contraception is defined as the prevention of conception using different contraceptives, where today it has been perfected with the most modern technology, thus incorporating graphene, which corresponds to an ultrathin layer of carbon atoms that provide greater resistance while allowing its thickness to be reduced, just like the nanolubricated condom that contains a layer of superhydrophilic nanoparticles. Objective: To describe the main characteristics and benefits of graphene and nanolubricated condoms as a barrier contraceptive method. Method: The bibliographic search was carried out using the keywords "graphene condom" and "nanolubricated condom". The following databases were used: PubMed Central, ResearchGate, BioMedCentral, Elsevier, Medigraphic. 42 investigations were identified among original articles and bibliographic reviews with the information, of which 33 met the criteria to be included in the review. Results: The implementation of graphene in the manufacture of contraceptives presents important benefits with minimal risks, so its massive use would be useful in the field of contraception. Conclusions: The progress of technology has made possible the development of graphene-based and nanolubricated condoms that promise to be the future of condoms, providing greater protection and sensitivity.
