Prevalencia de sobrepeso y obesidad en adultos de la serranía ecuatoriana. Resultados de la encuesta ENSANUT-2018

Abstract

Introduction: Worldwide the prevalence of obesity and overweight is increasing, however, in Europe obesity and overweight has tripled in the last twenty years, as well as it is estimated in Latin America, the prevalence of overweight is 58 %. Objective: To determine the prevalence of overweight and obesity in Ecuadorian adults residing in the Ecuadorian highlands. Method: Retrospective, descriptive cross-sectional study. The data analyzed were compiled by the national survey ENSANUT-2 018. It 35 001 adults from the 11 provinces of the Ecuadorian highlands are included. Results: 41.8% (n = 14 629) were overweight, 15.71% (n = 5 498) were obese I, 3.59% (n = 1 258) were obese II and 0.63% (n = 222) were obese III. The province with the highest prevalence of overweight is Imbabura with 44.4% and the province of Carchi had the highest percentage of type I, type II and Type II obesity with 22.1%, 5.19% and 0.95% respectively. Conclusions: In the last 20 years, Ecuador has increased the prevalence of obesity and overweight, where the provinces of the Sierra del Ecuador appear, Imbabura as the province with the highest number of cases of overweight and the province of Carchi with the three types of obesity.
