Abstract

Introduction. Spironolactone is a drug used primarily as a potassium-sparing diuretic because it acts as a competitive antagonist of mineralocorticoid receptors, but it can also be used as a cardiovascular agent, a metabolic endocrine agent, and as an antiandrogen. Objective. To describe other pharmacological actions of spironolactone from its antiandrogenic action. Methodology. Narrative bibliographic review. Information from books, scientific articles, reviews and theses about spironolactone and its other possible treatments in tegumentary diseases were included, using databases such as: medicap, Medscape, Medigraphic, SciELO, among others; in addition, different journals such as the nephrological journal, Urology and Nephrology journal, among others, were used. Results. We found 46 sources of information of which 2 are pharmacology books and 44 scientific articles of which only 33 references were used that contained the necessary information and met the selection criteria. Discussion: The use of spironolactone due to its anti-androgenic characteristics can be used in the treatment of androgenic alopecia, hirsutism and acne since it will act on peripheral androgen receptors inhibiting 5α-reductase, 17α-hydroxylase and 17,20-lyase. Conclusion: Spironolactone is a safe and effective drug for the treatment of dermatological diseases such as androgenic alopecia, acne and hirsutism either in monotherapy or combined with another drug. However, attention should be paid to the adverse effects and contraindications that it possesses.
