Programs for improving upper limb motor control in older adults: A bibliographic review

Introduction: The cognitive-motor component deteriorates in the aging process, compromising the sphere of functionality, impacting autonomy and independence, greatly limiting activities of daily living. There are countless documented strategies to improve motor control with special dedication to the lower extremity, however, there is poor evidence of strategies focused on the upper extremity. Objective: Analyze the evidence on rehabilitation models most used for the upper extremity. Methodology: A bibliographic review was carried out following the PRISMA guidelines. Databases such as PubMed, Web of Science, Elsevier, among others, were consulted. The literature review was carried out with the PeDro scale. Results: A total of 70 articles were found, under inclusion and exclusion criteria a final of 13 documents were obtained that were part of the review. Discussion: The review carried out brought to light that within programs focused on improving motor control of the upper limb are the use of theraBands, neuromuscular exercises, Pilates exercises, strength exercises and aerobics that ranged from 6 weeks onwards. All showing improvements in mobility and strength of the limb associated with independence. Conclusion: Interventions based on strengthening and postural control are effective in the motor rehabilitation of older adults, although comparative studies are required to establish the optimal protocol.
