Level of knowledge about contraceptive methods among adolescents from urban and rural areas of Ecuador

Introduction: Sexual and reproductive health aims to prevent unplanned pregnancies and reduce the risk of sexually transmitted diseases among adolescents. Therefore, the objective is to promote the utilization and procurement of information regarding contraceptive methods. Objective: The present study aims to analyze the knowledge of contraceptive methods among secondary school students in educational institutions located in both rural and urban areas of Ecuador. The study will determine the influence of the area of residence as a sociocultural factor. Methodology: An observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted with a population of 98 firstyear high school students from one urban educational institution (n = 21) and one rural educational institution (n = 77). The data collection process involved the utilization of a questionnaire originally developed by researcher Susana Vargas Sosa and subsequently adapted for the specific objectives of this study. Results: It was found that 95.2% of students from the urban institution had a high level of knowledge about contraceptive methods, compared with 59.7% of students from the rural area. This difference was statistically significant. Conclusions: It is evident that knowledge regarding contraceptive methods is more prevalent in urban areas. This is primarily attributed to the reduced access to sexual and reproductive health information and services within the rural population. These findings underscore the importance of enhancing comprehensive sexuality education programmes in rural areas, with a view to reducing information inequality, preventing teenage pregnancy and reducing the risk of sexually transmitted infections.
