Chemical and microbiological quality assessment of water for human consumption from the Benitez Municipal Water System, Pelileo Canton, Tungurahua Province

Introduction: Water quality is crucial for human health, as access to potable water prevents health issues, such as chronic child malnutrition. Objective: To assess the chemical and microbiological quality of drinking water in the Benítez parish. Methodology: Concentrations of chloride, nitrite, nitrate, fluoride, and phosphate were evaluated, as well as the presence of total coliforms in 120 samples of water designated for consumption. These samples were collected at 30 strategic points on two separate occasions. Results: The samples revealed chloride levels ranging from 8.3 to 24.1 mg/L, nitrite levels not exceeding 0.2 mg/L, and nitrate levels in the range of 4.3 to 7.87 mg/L, all within the limits of the NTE INEN 1108:2014 standards. On the other hand, fluoride content was 2.38 mg/L, exceeding established limits. Phosphate levels remained at 0.3 mg/L, within the maximum acceptable limit according to the same standards. In the microbiological analysis, the presence of fecal coliforms ranged from 0.21 to 0.31 CFU/100 mL, below regulatory limits. Conclusion: The water consumed in the Benítez parish meets quality standards.
